Insula by Michelle Sank | June 2021

In our continued collaboration with Elliott Gallery, our upstairs space was honoured to showcase a selection of works from Michelle Sank’s series “Insula.” Taken during her six-month residency with the Archisle Project on the Channel Island of Jersey in 2013, Sank’s photographs explore the cultural and social geography of the small island with her characteristic grace.

A contemporary of photography icons like David Goldblatt,  Michelle Sank uses her camera to investigate experiences of belonging and home within marginalised social spaces. Thoughtful and inquisitive, Sank’s quiet images are a masterclass in portrait photography, unearthing the uncanny power found in each of her sitters.
