In June of 2021, Republiek Gallery presented David van Dartel’s “Op Vlieland” in collaboration with Elliott Gallery, Amsterdam. After the closures of many art spaces during Covid-19 we were delighted to celebrate, in long overdue style, the wide scale success of this emerging new photographer.
The island of Vlieland is a site of total freedom for photographer David van Dartel. Around the age of fourteen van Dartel began to document his friends and family during their excursions to the island. These images offer a homage to the beauty of the island, serving both a testament to the landscape and a documentation of lasting friendship. Influenced by photographers like Christopher Bucklow and Ryan McGinley, van Dartel’s work is deeply evocative, striking in its carefree elegance.
